Abstract

In part 2 of the monodisperse particle technology webinar series, we discuss how utilizing monodisperse fully porous particle (MFPP) technology generates significantly higher resolution as compared to polydisperse particle technology, due to compressing the λ value of the chromatographic packed bed. This effectively minimizes the “Multi-path Effect or Eddy Diffusion (A) Term” in the Van Deemter Equation. We will apply this new technology to untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic screens.

Metabolomics refers to the comprehensive measurement of small molecules in biofluids by either mass spectrometry (MS) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with the aim of covering multiple KEGG pathways, exposome products, and chemical reactions to provide new insights into disease etiologies. Lipidomics is a subset of metabolomics focused specifically on the analysis of lipid species.

MS based metabolomics and lipidomics generally require the use of liquid chromatography to separate metabolites based on polarity and high-resolution MS to accurately measure the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio. Utilizing this new particle technology in conjunction with Dr. Tim Garrett and the Metabolomics Center of University of Florida we show how MFPP technology can be applied to critical LC/MS applications.
